8 Common Skincare Mistakes That May Be Preventing Your Best Skin

8 Common Skincare Mistakes We See Every Day (And How to Avoid Them)

After more than 22 years of helping clients achieve healthier skin, we've learned something surprising.

Most skin concerns aren't caused by using too few products—they're caused by using the wrong ones, using them incorrectly, or simply trying to do too much.

Every day, we meet people who are frustrated because their skincare routine isn't giving them the results they expected. More often than not, it isn't the products themselves—it's the habits.

Here are eight of the most common skincare mistakes we see and how you can avoid them.

1. Over-Exfoliating

One of the biggest skincare myths is that if a little exfoliation is good, more must be better.

Unfortunately, that's rarely true.

Over-exfoliating can weaken your skin barrier, leading to redness, irritation, dryness, sensitivity, and even breakouts. We often see clients combining exfoliating cleansers, facial scrubs, acid toners, masks, and retinol without realizing they're overdoing it.

If you're using Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 as directed, you generally don't need additional exfoliating products.

For many of our clients, using Lotion P50 morning and evening provides all the exfoliation their skin needs. Adding facial scrubs or other exfoliating acids on top of it often creates irritation instead of better results.

Healthy skin isn't about exfoliating more. It's about exfoliating appropriately and consistently.

2. Skipping Moisturizer Because Your Skin Feels Oily

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:

"My skin is oily, so I don't need moisturizer."

In reality, oily skin can still be dehydrated.

When skin lacks water, it may actually produce even more oil to compensate.

The right moisturizer helps support your skin barrier, keeps your skin balanced, and often improves—not worsens—oiliness.

3. Buying Products Because They Went Viral

Social media has introduced people to some wonderful skincare products.

It's also convinced many people they need products they simply don't.

The product that transformed someone else's skin may not be right for yours.

Your age, lifestyle, hormones, environment, medications, and skin history all affect what your skin needs.

The best skincare routine isn't the trendiest one.

It's the one that's personalized for you.

4. Picking at Your Skin

We've all done it.

But squeezing blemishes usually creates more problems than it solves.

Picking increases inflammation, delays healing, and raises the risk of pigmentation and scarring.

Sometimes the hardest skincare advice to follow is also the simplest:

Leave it alone.

5. Expecting Overnight Results

Beautiful skin is built over time.

Whether you're treating acne, pigmentation, texture, or signs of aging, consistency always beats quick fixes.

Professional treatments can absolutely speed up improvement, but no facial or serum can replace a good routine followed every day.

Healthy, radiant skin is a journey—not a race.

6. Waiting Until Bedtime to Do Your Evening Skincare

This is one of the easiest habits to change.

Many people wait until they're exhausted before washing their face.

Whenever possible, try to complete your evening skincare routine an hour or two before bed. This gives your products time to absorb instead of rubbing off on your pillowcase.

For many of our clients, a simple routine is the most effective: cleanse, apply Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 (as directed), then your recommended serum and moisturizer.

When you're using Lotion P50 morning and evening, you generally don't need additional exfoliating acids or facial scrubs unless we've specifically recommended them.

Your skin naturally shifts into repair mode while you sleep. Giving your products time to absorb helps you get the maximum benefit from every product you use.

7. Trying to Make Your Skincare Last Too Long

We hear this all the time:

"I'm trying to make it last."

We completely understand. Professional skincare is an investment, and it's natural to want to make every bottle last as long as possible.

But using too little can actually prevent you from getting the results you paid for.

Every product is formulated to be used in a recommended amount. If you're only applying a tiny dab of serum or moisturizer to stretch it out, your skin may not be receiving enough of the active ingredients to work effectively.

Ironically, trying to save product can end up costing you more because you're not allowing it to perform as intended.

The goal isn't to use more than necessary.

It's to use the right amount, every time.

If you're ever unsure how much product to use, ask us. We'd much rather show you the proper amount than have you unknowingly shortchange your skin.

8. Holding On to Products That No Longer Work for Your Skin

This may be the mistake we see most often.

A client will tell us,

"I've been using this product for years."

Our first question is usually,

"Has your skin stayed exactly the same over those years?"

The answer is almost always no.

Your skin changes with age, hormones, stress, medications, the seasons, and even your environment.

A moisturizer or serum that was perfect a few years ago may no longer be giving your skin what it needs today.

One of the greatest benefits of working with a skincare professional is having someone evaluate your skin as it is now—not as it was years ago.

Sometimes the smallest adjustment—a different serum, a richer moisturizer, or a simpler routine—is all it takes to get your skin back on track.

Great Skin Doesn't Come From Having More Products

After more than 22 years, one thing has remained constant: beautiful skin rarely comes from doing more.

It comes from doing the right things consistently.

We often see clients arrive with a cabinet full of products, hoping one more purchase will solve the problem. More often than not, the answer isn't adding another step—it's simplifying the routine, using high-quality products correctly, and giving them time to work.

At Tres Belle Spa, every facial begins with a personalized skin analysis. We look at your skin as it is today, discuss your goals, and recommend a routine that's tailored to your skin—not to trends or what's popular on social media.

Healthy skin shouldn't feel complicated.

Our philosophy has always been simple: use the right products, in the right amounts, consistently—and adjust your routine as your skin changes.

Sometimes those small changes make the biggest difference.

If you're wondering whether your current routine is helping your skin—or holding it back—we'd be happy to help.
